A Unit FULL of ENERGY

Dear Parents,

For our new unit on ENERGY, Grade 3 and 4 are going to be Scientists.
In order to develop our scientific thinking, we are going to be conducting some basic experiments.[This article on the value of scientific thinking may interest you]

In order to prepare for this, we are asking that all learners have access to the resources on this Unit Supplies List.

Some of these supplies you may already have at home, most of them are easily available from Daiso or Lawson. Please try to make certain you have all of these supplies over the next two weeks.

*Mr Justin and I have a stock of LED lights at school - if you do not have one at home and aren't able to purchase a single unit please let us know and you can come and collect one from school or we will send you one in the post.

Hats off to our Grade 4 parents!

For months, the classroom's set up has been changed more than five times. It was really challenging to come up and maintain classroom set up for a long time. But, thanks to all the parents who volunteered to do spring cleaning last Wednesday, 12 February 2020.

The parents, esp the moms, shared their expert opinion about space and how space can contribute to the learning of the students. They helped in arranging the furniture and also disinfected and cleaned the classroom materials.

The Grade 4s were surprised togo back to a new classroom after their PE.

How maps help us understand events

On Friday, Grades 3 and 4 learned from our expert guest speaker, Mrs. Petra Steiners about the reunification of East and West Germany. Mrs. Steiners shared her knowledge about that big historical event that changed and affected the whole of Germany and the world. She also explained how the map of Germany and Berlin reflect the divided Germany before and how the new map looks like at present.

It was a meaningful experience also for teachers as we got more inputs added to our bank of knowledge.

Making Landscapes in Art Class

The students were fortunate to have one of the class parents, Mr. L. Nepomuceno to teach them (Grades 3 and 4) how to make paper mache. The finished products are still wet so they need to wait for a couple more days before they can paint their work. :)

Map Experts Gallery Walk

Last Monday, the students presented what they are able to collect about the type of map of their choice. They chose also to be creative in their ways by using various means of sharing their understanding. The class made video, booklets, pop-books, poster, etc. of their research. They were displayed in the classroom and everybody went around to learn from other experts. They also provided constructive feedback on other groups' outputs.

Becoming EXPERTS

The class is now into finding out about the different types and how they are important. They grouped themselves based on their interest. The presentation of their outputs will be on Monday. :)

Finding Treasures around Rokko Island

It was such a challenging but really a fun experience to find treasures around the island. The Grades 3 and 4 learners were divided into 5 groups. Each group was led by an adult: teachers and parent volunteers.

The main purpose of the activity is for the kids to apply their understanding of maps and how maps help us locate places.

As time was limited, the kids were not able to find all 4 'caches'. This is a good way to bond on weekends. Try it with them sometime. Download the app to your phone. :)

Element of Value

This week, we focused on the element of value in our Art lesson. They were challenged to show colour scale by tinting and shading. It was challenging for almost everybody but they did their best and tried to apply their knowledge to the best of their ability. :)

Grade 4 Assembly

Grade 4s used simple dramatic plays to raise awareness about what is happening around the world. They really hoped that they have sent their messages successfully. They also hoped that you enjoyed their simple but meaningful presentation.

ANGLE HUNT

Using their protractors, our young detectives were challenged to locate some mystery angles. With the map given to them at hand, they located the mystery angles and measured them using their protractors. Some were able to locate all five of them. Some got stuck at three. But what is important is the FUN they felt when they were doing it. :)

The Element of Colours

For our ART lesson this week, the students learnt more about COLOURS as an element of ARTS and how colour choices are made, and affect the aesthetic quality of a piece of art.
