Computer Science Session at CA

Dear Grade 4 families,

On December 9th, 2019 neighbouring educators Canadian Academy will be hosting a special computer science event with Ms. Emma Haruka Iwao.

Emma is from Osaka and currently works with a team at Google (U.S.A) who recently broke a world record in the computer sciences sphere!

Grades 3 - 6 have been invited to attend this exciting event where Emma will talk about life as a software engineer and how her childhood dream has come true.

We will be at Canadian Academy from 14:25 - 15:15 and will return to school in time for a 15:30 dismissal. However, for those learners who are interested in extending their experience additional coding activities will be offered from 15:15 onwards in the same venue.

If your child would like to stay on after the talk, please send an email to the homeroom teacher - your child must then be collected from Canadian Academy or be allowed to make their own way home.

Thank you.

Talk about supply and demand in clubs

Last Friday, 29 November 2019, Mr. Brabant was invited as a special guest speaker to talk about how clubs run and how the clubs for the year are decided.

He mentioned about knowing the demand of the members of the school as shown in the survey sent at the beginning of every club term.

He also talked about why having 4 members minimum in a club is necessary. He broke down the expenses of a club and showed where the club fees go.

As a bonus, he went to advertising the clubs in different ways: posters, videos, demonstration and word of mouth.

It was a great and informative sharing. Thanks Mr. Brabant!

PEARL EXCHANGE

This activity helped the learners get an understanding of the relationship between supply and demand, and PRICE (increase/decrease).

The learners took turns in the pretend play, as SELLERS and BUYERS in a PEARL MARKET. They were allowed to negotiate and use their strong communication skills to convince their partners to SELL/BUY their pearl closest to their MINIMUM SELLING/MAXIMUM BUYING capacity. The scenarios were twisted by adding more buyers or more sellers in the last two rounds. The last part, REFLECTION, they observed the effect of the changes to the PRICE of the commodity.

Building a BUSINESS - How to put a price on a commodity

Grades 3 and 4 had a fun and mouthwatering activity as they learnt how to make CAKE POPS without cooking or baking anything. Though the main highlight is not on the food itself but on how they can put a price on their product, still the learners appreciated the entirety of the learning experience.

HOW DO WE PUT A PRICE ON THE PRODUCT?
A few terminology and ideas came out as part of the discussion that happened after the activity. Below are the things that the learners shared.
COST (capital or expenses), DEMAND, PLACE/SPACE, TIME, TASTE AND SIZE OF THE PRODUCT, COMPETITION (price set by other stores/shops) are factors that help us determine what price to put on our product.

New terms that came out of this discussion are PROFIT, LOSS, DEMAND, SUPPLY, COMPETITION,

How to Make an EGG SANDWICH

As an introduction to writing a procedure text, our class made a simple and easy-to-make snack - EGG SANDWICH!

Meeting Aya-Sensei, a great ARTIST

Grades 3 and 4 were lucky to have been given a chance to meet one great artist here in Japan. Aya-Sensei conducted a workshop on painting and explained how painting is a form of art and an expression of oneself. She discussed how painting can generate income. Focusing more on how painting is marketed, and reasons why paintings are bought.

TRADING, EXPORT, IMPORT

It was a bit challenging to make the students understand the concept behind trading. They know the difference between exportation and importation as well as the reasons behind trading. However, making them grasp the mechanics of how it is done, and how product availability, global competition, mass production, demand and supply affect the pricing and value of the commodity was challenging. However, thanks to this activity. This answered their queries on trading. :)

St. Martin Day

Lanterne, Lanterne... It is always a great experience to remember the heroic act of St. Martin. His selflessness is remarkable. On St, Martin Day, the school commemorates him and his act by showing a short event of his life and going around the island while carrying a lantern and singing songs. The highlight of it is the sharing of bread at school, replicating the selfless act done by St. Martin.

Field Trip on December 4

Grades 3-6 Field Trip

On Wednesday, December 4th the Grade 3-6 classes will be going on a field trip to see the dress rehearsal of the Wizard of Oz. This production will be staged by students at Kansai International Academy and will take place at Kobe-city Higashinada Kumin Center by Sumiyoshi station. The purpose of this field trip is for our learners to get an opportunity to see a production by another international school as a provocation to our year-long drama units. We are planning to have an early lunch and leave the school at 11:15 and return by 15:30. School lunch will be canceled and refunded so please make sure your child brings a lunch.
